Agia Paraskevi, Florina

Agia Paraskevi (Greek: Αγία Παρασκευή, Bulgarian and Macedonian: Света Петка, Sveta Petka[1]) is a village in the prefecture of Florina, Greece. The village of Agia Paraskevi is one of several border villages along the frontier of Greece and the Republic of Macedonia with a Slavophone population, although a 1993 survey claims that the Macedonian language was used primarily by the elderly.[2]

History

Agia Paraskevi was originally known under the name of "Sveta Petka" in the Bulgarian/Macedonian language[1], but was changed to its Greek equivalent of "Agia Paraskevi", on December 21, 1918. The village is said to have been settled in the 1400s, and was originally one with the villages of Dragoš (in modern day Republic of Macedonia) and Opširina (modern day Ethnikon, Florina, Greece).

On the 1914 Electoral Census of Agia Paraskevi, many first and last names are not their original, for example: The "Opašinov" surname was changed to "Smardenkas", the "Čekoutanov" surname was changed to "Tsekoutanis" and the "Koronov" surname was changed to "Koronaios".
